Peter Gabriel - Live!

One of my musical heroes, Peter Gabriel has been pushing the boundaries of musical recording and performance for over 20 years.

First in the band, Genesis he adorned himself with flowers, hats, costumes and anything to get peoples attention. Fortunately he also had powerful concepts and a unique voice that demanded open ears and hearts.

One other thing about Peter Gabriel is that he had the sense to work with brilliant musicians.

Tony Levine - Bass, Manu Katche - Drums - David Rodes - Guitar. Some truly innovative and highly skilled musicians that brought passion, flare and texture to his message.

Speaking of message Peter Gabriel also often touches on subject such as Politics, Love, Loss, Personal Freedom and Human Rights.

He is responsible for the founding or co-founding of the following organizations.

REALWORLD - A fantastic world music record label with artists such as, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Geoffrey Oryema and Shila Chandra.

Daniel Lanois - Producer, Musician and Sound Explorer - A powerful influence

The brilliant, the one and only Daniel Lanois.

Producer, Musician and Sound Explorer, this one man has influenced my work and sense of musical possibility more than any other artist.

Apart from his own musical works (which are fantastic) his list of production credits are awesome. Bob Dylan, U2, Peter Gabriel, The Neville Brothers, Robbie Robertson, Emmylou Harris and Brian Eno are just a few of the people that have created their best work (in my opinion) with him as their production guide. Here you can enjoy one of his most beautiful songs, called Still Water from his 1989 album Acadie. I believe that this features the rhythm section from U2, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullin Jr. Followed by a few more bits. Enjoy!

A Ship Called True - A song waiting to happen?

Just combing the archives and discovered this little abstract piece of prose. What does it mean?

I rather think that this evokes feelings and settings that would make for an interesting song. If you think the same let me know and even perhaps suggest a musical style that might work. Until then I will ponder the words and the mind of the writer. Who is he?

Trading places with progress a stranger no less

Light Of Love - I wrote this song at 17 years old and it came out of a deep feeling for the sadness in the world as well as myself. It gives us a look at love from 3 different perspectives.

Parents and their connection with children.

The chords were a real experiment too that certainly makes for an open sound. By the way the recording is quite recent so I am obviously performing it better than I did then, however the arrangement and the lyrics are unchanged.

I think this was when I started to realize that music could be a strong form of expression for me and could communicate a powerful sense of understanding and intensity that matched my need to express. I have decided to start publishing my music here on this site.

Every week I am going to upload a song for you to download and listen to straight away.

I am also going to try publish them chronologically, so you can get a feeling for the progression of songs I have written. This is very much going to be a retrospective process for myself as well so you may encounter some weird sounds and bad recordings.

After all my first experiments with recording involved a microphone hanging from the ceiling! From little things, big things grow as they say.

You are free to download everything as I release it and at some point I will throw up a Donation button when I feel there is enough music to warrant it.

Global Warming framed in terms of risk management

This is the best explanation I have ever heard for the case of Global Warming.

Firstly, hes a scientist, with a sense of humor (even if its a little cheesy), and secondly its almost impossible to argue against his logic (even though I’m sure plenty of people would try).

Why? Because if you weigh up all the possibilities and the risk that is associated with each one the conclusion is very clear. Heres the movie…Click here to view the embedded video.

So how do you feel about the issue now?

For the record I believe (with damn good evidence) that it is definitely human activity causing the warming!

The bottom line for me is that if you want to ignore the risk (and a lot of people are), you can, but at least now we’re under no illusions as to what is at stake.

Hey its only the livability of the planet we’re talking about!

I had a conversation once with someone that considered himself very knowledgeable and “scientific” and yet his evidence simply backed up what he wanted to believe. His argument was that the patterns of the sun affect global warming and that this warming we’re experiencing is normal and natural.

By the way that is very true that the sun affects the warmth of the globe (amongst many other complex variables) but if you follow the Sun/Temp charts up to the present day they tell a very disturbing tale.

“The report says that it is likely that effect of human activity since 1750 is five times greater than the effect of fluctuations in the sun’s output.”

Here it is simply.

For the first time in the history of the planet, the earth is getting dramatically warmer while the sun activity shows a general leveling off and even a drop. To me what this means is that we are changing the balance of the atmosphere ina way that will change and is changing the livability of this eco-system.

In addition try this as an experience.

Next time you are standing on a street corner, simply stop and look around. Take a moment to breath in the fumes and appreciate the subtle aroma of CO2.
Now imagine all the cars in this town that are driving around and all the fumes from those.
Now zoom out and see the major cities in your country and all the activity that must be going on there.
Now add all the industry and other forms of travel like boats and planes to the equation.
Now zoom out further and imagine all the activity going in all the major cities and towns and roads and rivers and oceans around the world right now.
And now look at the pace its all going at, and rememebr that this has been going on for over 100 years!

So now this issue is no longer only intellectual and its much harder to continue to be complacent. I’m sure many of us will continue to live in denial of the risks, but that in my opinion is no way to live.

Disregard for the welfare of our home is akin to self loathing in my opinion and reinforces the idea that we can be a law unto ourselves and are not subject to an ecology on which we rely for our very existence.

Sure, I am part of the problem in simply being here and using up resources and driving etc, but I feel more real in accepting the situation as it is.

The key for me is to be authentic and honest. This is the least we can do and its a good start towards having a a social and environmental conscience. Peace to you and may we start to consider the welfare of this wonderful system called Earth.

Inspirational Politics - Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says Sorry

Those 2 words never go together do they? Inspiration and Politics.

Most of the words are more like, depressing, boring, bickering, even hate and loathing frequently enter into it. So what would be cause for inspiration?

Well Humility for one thing.

And the character to acknowledge an intergenerational wrong. Most colonial governments (and settlers) have a list of cruelties as long as 10 arms perpetrated on the indigenous people of a land. In our case in Australia, its the Aborigines. A proud, deep people that have until the last 10 years been relegated to the too hard basket.

What was the wrong? Well a lot of them were killed, but more recently (until the early 70s) the government was forcibly removing children from their families in the interests of ’safety’. They are called The Stolen Generation.

Roughly 1 in every 5 children were take from their families and relocated into Christian schools under the pretense of securing their future. Not surprisingly it had the opposite effect of displacing their families and subjecting them to decades of personal distress. A tribal people ripped away from their young ones.

So after nearly 12 years of conservative government under the Liberal Party (The American equivalent of the Republicans -cept Ron Paul) a party of the people as making very human statements to its indigenous custodians. The Aborigines. Sorry.

“It’s about us coming together as a country, acknowledging our past and moving on, accepting each other as brothers and sisters of this nation.”

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

So for the first time I can remember I am inspired by an Australian Prime Minster and reminded very powerfully of what being Australian means.

A fair go for everyone.

Those 2 words never go together do they? Inspiration and Politics.

Most of the words are more like, depressing, boring, bickering, even hate and loathing frequently enter into it. So what would be cause for inspiration?

Well Humility for one thing.

“It’s about us coming together as a country, acknowledging our past and moving on, accepting each other as brothers and sisters of this nation.”

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

So for the first time I can remember I am inspired by an Australian Prime Minster and reminded very powerfully of what being Australian means.

A fair go for everyone.
